- *tBackgammon Tutorial*
- *p4 Backgammon is one of Éthe Éclassic board games, and has
- èbeen played for over four thousand Éyears, Ésince the times of the
- èancient Egyptians.
-
- *p1*c01,45Backgammon's rules are simple, Éyet it remains a
- èchallenge to the Émost Éexperienced Éplayer. ÉGames Éare quick and
- èexciting, ensuring none is ever boring, Éand the element of chance
- èmeans both players always have a chance of winning.*U52,30,00*p4
-
- Read on for the backgammon tutorial*m*e
-
-
- *tGetting Started*
- Serious Backgammon is entirely Émouse Écontrolled, and has
- èbeen carefully designed to be as intuitive to use as possible.
-
- *p4 During play, you select a Épiece to move by clicking on
- èit with the left mouse button. If Éyou Écan move it (i.e. if it is
- èone of your Épieces) Éit Éwill Ébe Éhighlighted Éwith Éa Étick. To
- ècomplete the move, Éclick Éon Éthe Époint Éyou Éwish Éto Émove to.
- èObviously, this position must be valid under backgammon rules, and
- ènot occupied by two or more Éof Éyour opponent's pieces, or out of
- èreach of your dice. To cancel Éthe Émove, click again on the first
- èpiece, that is highlighted, and the tick will be removed.*e
-
- *tInstructions*
- *c00,47 Backgammon is played Éon Éa board containing twenty
- èfour points. The board is divided Éinto Éfour Étables, Éwith six points in each
- ètable. Each player has fifteen counters, laid out as illustrated ...*i51,04,57
- *p4*c21,99*i02,38,55Opponents face each Éother Éacross the
- èboard and move in opposite Édirections, their pieces crossing over
- èeach other. The winning Éplayer Éis Éthe Éfirst Éto move all their
- èpieces round to their "inner" table, Éand from there bear them off
- èthe board.*e
-
-
- *p4*c00,53*i57,06,53
- Movement is decided by the roll Éof two dice. You can move
- èone counter twice or move two counters. If you throw a double, you
- èare allowed four separate moves, e.g. Éa Édouble six means you can
- èmove four sixes.
-
- *p1*c20,99*i04,40,54 ÉEach Émove Émust ÉÉbe Émade Éin Éyour
- èdirection of movement. You cannot land on a point if your opponent
- èoccupies it with two or more of his pieces.*e
-
- *tCapturing pieces*
- *p4*c20,99*i04,06,56A single piece is known as a BLOT. If you
- èland on one of your opponent's blots, it is removed from the board
- èand placed on the bar. A Éplayer Éwho Éhas Épieces on the bar MUST
- èplay them immediately, into his outermost table. If he cannot move
- èthem his turn is forfeit.*i15,39,58*i45,39,59*e
-
- *tBearing Off*
- *p4 Once all your pieces are Éinside your inner table, i.e.
- èin the innermost six points, you Écan Ébear Éthem off the board. A
- èpiece can bear off if Éit Écan Émove Éexactly the number of spaces
- èrequired, i.e. 5 from point 5, 2 from Époint 2 etc, OR if the dice
- èroll is greater than the number of Éspaces required, and it is the
- èhighest placed piece.
-
-
- *c00,50 To bear off, simply Éselect Éthe Épiece Éin Éthe normal way, and
- èclick off the board to the left to select the destination.*i57,35,63*e
-
- *tAutomatic Moves*
- In certain game positions there will only be Éone way in which you can play.
- èFor example, if you are bearing off Éand Éthrow Éa double six, this can only be
- èused to move your outermost counters off the board.
-
- *p1In these situations an A icon Éwill Éappear Éin Éthe centre of the board.
- èSimply click on this with the left mouse Ébutton and the computer will make all
- èyour moves for you.
-
- *p4 This feature can be turned off from the preferences game screen.*e
-
-
- *tDoubling*
- If a player feels confident of winning, Éhe Écan double the stakes for which
- èthe game is played, by Éoffering Éthe Édoubling Écube Éto Éhis opponent. If the
- èopponent accepts, the points won at the end Éof the game will be doubled. If he
- èrefuses to accept a double he must Éresign, Éand the first player wins the game
- èfor the initial stake.
-
- *c00,56*p1 Each player can double as many times as he likes, up to a limit of
- è64. Either player can double first, Ébut Éonce Éyou have doubled, your opponent
- ègains possession of the cube and only he can double next.
- *i60,40,66*i62,44,67*i64,48,68*e
-
-
- *tDoubling*
- *p1 To offer a double, simply click Éon Éthe Éred doubling cube with the left
- èmouse button. Initially the cube shows 64, Éwhich Émeans no double has yet been
- èproposed.
-
- *p4 Choosing the right time to make a Édouble is a fine judgement. If you are
- ècertain of winning offering a double can Ébe Éa big mistake. Your opponent will
- èsimply resign and thus save himself from a possible gammon or worse. So the art
- èof doubling is to offer the cube to Éyour opponent whilst he still has a chance
- èof winning, but your position looks likely to improve.
- *e
-
- *tDomino Backgammon*
- Playing backgammon with dominos adds Ésubstantially Éto Éthe skill needed to
- èwin. Instead of relying on Éthe Éroll Éof Éthe Édice Éto decide each move, both
- èplayers start with a set of twelve dominos. At the start of each move, a player
- èchooses one domino which he then Éuses Éas Éhis Édice Éroll. Having a choice of
- ètwelve greatly increases your ability Éto Élook Éahead, Éand plan a sequence of
- èmoves. You can also see your opponent's Édominos and predict what moves he will
- èmake.
-
- *p1 To choose a domino, simply click Éon Éit with the left mouse button. Once
- èall twelve dominos have been used by both players, a fresh set will be dealt.*e
-
-
- *tAnalysis*
- *p4 The analysis screen shows a quick Éestimate of the current game position.
- èTwo totals are shown for each player - Éthe Épip count and the number of cross-
- èovers, which are used to calculate Éthe Éapproximate probability of the leading
- èplayer winning.*i06,28,73*i44,26,72*e
-
-
- *tAdvanced Backgammon Tutorial*
- *p4 Backgammon is a miniature game Éof É*p1warfare*p4. The opposing sides are
- ècontinually Éattacking Éeach Éother Éand Ésimultaneously Édefending Étheir Éown
- èpositions. A single dice throw can Érescue Éa previously hopeless situation, or
- èruin a carefully planned attack.
-
- The secret of backgammon is Éto Écontinually Ére-assess your game plan.
- èAlways remain *p1flexible*p4, ready to change your strategy at any time.
-
- The following guide shows how Éto *p1plan*p4 your game, to
- è*p1analyse*p4 your situation, and Éhow Éto Éplay Éfrom many *p1key
- èpositions*p4.
- *e
-
-
- *tMovement and Probability*
- *p4 Each move in backgammon is Égoverned by the roll of two
- èdice. As each die has six Éfaces, Éit Écan land showing any number
- èfrom 1 to 6. For both dice, this means there are 6 x 6 or 36 total
- ècombinations of dice throws. ÉSome Éof Éthese Éare duplicates, for
- èexample É1,2 Éis Éthe Ésame Éas ÉÉ2,1. ÉÉIn Étotal Éthere Éare É21
- è*p1different*p4 dice combinations.
-
- A *p1direct*p4 move covers six points Éor less, that is it
- ècan be Émade Éwith Éa Ésingle Édie Éroll. ÉAn É*p1indirect*p4, Éor
- ècombination move, crosses more Éthan Ésix Époints, and always uses
- èboth dice.
- *e
-
-
- *tMovement Probability Table*
- *p4 The Étable Ébelow Éshows Éthe Érelative Éprobability of
- èmoving any given distance...*i05,19,74
- *e
-
-
- *tUsing the Probability Table*
- *p4 From the probability table, Éyou Écan Ésee that you are
- èfar Émore Élikely Éto ÉÉachieve ÉÉa ÉÉ*p1direct*p4 Émove Éthan Éan
- è*p1indirect*p4 one. In fact, there are 17 different ways in which
- èit is possible to move Ésix Époints, Éwhich gives a probability of
- è17/36 or 47%! This means Éthat Éit is extremely *p1dangerous*p4 to
- èleave a blot six points away from Éyour Éopponent - but it will be
- èrelatively safe seven points away.
-
- When you Éare Éplaying Éa Égame, Éremember Éthat Énot Éall
- ècombinations will be available, because Ésome Époints will be held
- èby your opponent.*e
-
-
- *tOpening Moves*
- *p4*c00,50 Each player Éstarts Éwith Étheir Épieces on only
- èfour points. Two of these Époints Écontain five counters. In order
- èto win with the maximum Éscore, Éyour Éaim should be to *p1trap*p4
- èyour opponent behind a solid wall Éof your pieces, with two pieces
- èon each consequtive point.*U55,12,00*c00,99
-
- A solid wall of six consequtive points is a *p1prime*p4. A
- èprime cannot be jumped because no Ésingle move can be greater than
- èsix points. Building a prime to Étrap your opponent should be your
- èmain objective.*e
-
-
- *tInitial Strategy*
- *p4 The start position has two points holding five counters
- èeach. This is too many. In Égeneral Éyou Éshould aim to control as
- èmany points as possible, by having Étwo counters on each. Any more
- èwastes the surplus counters.
- *c21,99*i02,35,75
- In order to block your opponent's back counters, there are
- èseveral *p1key points*p4 to build on. These are points *p15, 7, 4,
- è3 and 9*p4, in that order. Always keep control of point *p16*p4.
- *e
-
-
- *tPlaying Off the Bar*
- *p4 At some stage in every Égame, you will probably have to
- èplay at least one counter off the Ébar. ÉIn Éthe Éearly stages of the game this
- èshould be easy, Ébut Élater Éon Épieces Écan Ébe Étrapped Éfor Ésome time, with
- èdisastrous consequences.
-
- The odds against re-entering a counter from the bar depend
- èentirely on how many points Éyour Éopponent Écontrols in his inner
- èboard. If he controls only Éone Éor Étwo points, you will re-enter
- èvery quickly, but Éif Éhe Éhas Éfive Époints Éyou Éwill have great
- èdifficulty playing.
- *e
-
-
- *tPlaying Off the Bar*
- *p4*c00,38 The Étables Ébelow Éshow Éthe Éprobabilities for
- èentering first one counter off the bar, and then two, depending on
- èhow many points are controlled Éby Éyour Éopponent. It is far more
- è*p1difficult*p4 to enter two Écounters Éthan Éjust Éone. ÉFor example, with two
- ècounters on the bar Éand É5 Époints Éheld Éby Éyour Éopponent, Éyou have only a
- è*p13%*p4 chance of playing both!*i40,04,76*e
-
-
- *tBearing Off*
- *p4 Once you have Émoved Éall Éyour Écounters Éback to your
- èinner table, you can begin bearing off. If you are well ahead, you
- èmay well have trapped one Éof Émore Éof your opponent's pieces. In
- èthis case, play Écautiously. É*p1Do Énot Éexpose Éa blot*p4 unless
- èabsolutely necessary. Always try to ensure a balanced, even number
- èof counters on your highest points.
-
- If you are in no danger, Éyou Éwant Éto bear off in as few
- èmoves as possible. If you cannot bear a piece off with a move, use
- èit to move a piece onto a space, or to remove excess counters from
- èa point which has more than others.*e
-
-
- *tConclusion*
- *p4 That concludes Éthis Ébrief Étutorial. ÉBackgammon is a
- èfascinating game, and there Éare Émany Éexcellent books available,
- èfor those who take a deeper interest in the game.
-
- Good luck in all Éyour Égames É- Éthere are many excellent
- èbooks on backgammon available.
